Bali Top 10 Things to Do: Love, Create, Play in Paradise

Spending two months in Bali is like living out a dream, an experience that resonates with the essence of "Eat Pray Love" but with my own twist of "Love, Create, Play."

This enchanting island has become my canvas for exploration, creativity, and joy. Over the course of these two months, I've journeyed through the vibrant locales of Canggu, Ubud, Legian, Umalas, Seminyak, Kuta, Uluwatu, Nusa Penida, and even ventured to the nearby Gili Air.

Throughout this adventure, I've called ten different homes in Bali my own, each offering a unique perspective on Balinese life. Three of these homes were part of a digital marketing project with The Bali Agent, allowing me to dive deep into the local culture while contributing to the promotion of Bali’s luxury villas and experiences.

From the tranquil rice terraces of Ubud to the bustling beaches of Seminyak, the majestic cliffs of Uluwatu to the serene waters of Nusa Penida, every corner of Bali offers something extraordinary.

Whether you're an adrenaline junkie, a nature lover, or a digital nomad looking for the perfect blend of work and play, Bali has something for you. Join me as I share the top 10 things to do in Bali, each experience a testament to the island's magic and my unforgettable journey of love, creativity, and play.

With my travel to 7 continents now at 40+ countries, Bali captivated my spirit, soul, mind and body in more ways than one.

It is time to put Bali on your bucket list.

During my full-time travels in Bali, I stayed a week in Canggu, two weeks in Ubud, a week between 3 villas for a Creator to CMO project, Kuta in a coliving and coworking space, and visited Uluwatu, Nusa Penida and Gili Air.

Originally, I planned to travel to Bali for one month between the beach and Ubud. However, I quickly realized I wanted to explore Bali at a much deeper level.

Whether you will spend one day, a week, or two months like I did, you will love it.

Bail Highlights

Bali is historically, culturally and geographically known for several aspects:

Rich History and Culture

Bali, often referred to as the "Island of the Gods," is renowned for its rich and vibrant culture, which is deeply intertwined with its spiritual and artistic traditions. Here are some key aspects that make Balinese culture unique and world-famous:

Spirituality and Religion

Hinduism

Unlike the predominantly Muslim Indonesia, Bali is primarily Hindu. Balinese Hinduism is a unique blend of Indian Hinduism, Buddhism, and ancient Javanese animism. This spiritual diversity is evident in the daily life of the Balinese people, who engage in numerous religious rituals and ceremonies.

Temples

Bali is home to thousands of temples, each with its own significance and beauty. Major temples like Besakih (the Mother Temple), Tanah Lot, and Uluwatu attract pilgrims and tourists alike. These temples are integral to the spiritual landscape of the island, hosting elaborate ceremonies and festivals.

Art and Craftsmanship

Dance and Music

Balinese dance and music are integral parts of the island's cultural heritage. Traditional dances such as the Barong, Legong, and Kecak (Monkey Dance) are performed during religious ceremonies and cultural shows. Gamelan, an ensemble of traditional musical instruments, provides the rhythmic backdrop to these dances.

Traditional Crafts

Bali is known for its exquisite craftsmanship. The island’s artisans are skilled in woodcarving, stone carving, silver jewelry making, and batik fabric production. Ubud, in particular, is a hub for artists and craftsmen, offering a myriad of galleries and workshops.

Festivals and Ceremonies

Galungan and Kuningan

These are among the most important religious festivals in Bali. Galungan celebrates the victory of good (dharma) over evil (adharma) and involves offerings, prayers, and traditional dances. Kuningan marks the end of the Galungan period, with further offerings and rituals to honor ancestors.

Nyepi

Known as the Day of Silence, Nyepi is the Balinese New Year and is observed with a day of complete silence, fasting, and meditation. The day before Nyepi, the island comes alive with colorful parades and the Ogoh-Ogoh procession, where large papier-mâché effigies of demons are displayed and later burned to ward off evil spirits.

Community and Social Structure

Banjar System

The Banjar is a traditional community organization in Bali that plays a crucial role in managing village affairs, including ceremonies, festivals, and community projects. It fosters a strong sense of community and mutual cooperation among villagers.

Subak System

This traditional irrigation system is a testament to the Balinese philosophy of Tri Hita Karana, which seeks to balance the spiritual, human, and natural worlds. The Subak system, recognized by UNESCO, not only supports agriculture but also reinforces social and spiritual harmony among farmers.

Cuisine

Local Dishes

Balinese cuisine is rich and varied, known for its aromatic spices and fresh ingredients. I loved eating Gado Gado, an Indonesian salad of raw, slightly boiled, blanched or steamed vegetables and hard-boiled eggs, boiled potato, fried tofu and tempeh, and sliced lontong, served with a peanut sauce dressing.

Festive Foods

Special occasions and religious festivals often feature unique foods and offerings, such as the intricate Banten offerings made from rice, flowers, and fruits, symbolizing gratitude and reverence to the gods.

Traditional Clothing

Kebaya and Sarong

Balinese traditional attire for women includes the Kebaya, a lace blouse worn with a Sarong or Kain (a long cloth wrapped around the waist). Men typically wear a Batik shirt with a Sarong and a Udeng (traditional headcloth).

Ceremonial Attire

During religious ceremonies and festivals, Balinese people don elaborate traditional clothing, often in vibrant colors, to honor the deities and ancestors.

Hospitality and Daily Life

Friendly Locals

Balinese people are known for their warmth and hospitality. The island’s culture emphasizes community, respect for elders, and kindness to guests, making visitors feel welcome.

Daily Offerings

Small daily offerings called Canang Sari, made of flowers, rice, and incense, are placed in temples, shrines, and even on sidewalks to honor the gods and spirits. This practice is a daily expression of gratitude and spirituality.

In summary, Bali's culture is a rich tapestry of spiritual practices, artistic expression, community values, and traditional customs. It’s this unique blend that draws visitors from around the world to experience the island's enchanting way of life.

Strategic Location

Bali, strategically located between Java and Lombok, serves as a vital link within the Indonesian archipelago. Its proximity to the equator ensures a tropical climate, making it an ideal year-round destination for tourists seeking sun, sand, and surf. The island's accessibility is further enhanced by Ngurah Rai International Airport, one of Indonesia's busiest, which connects Bali to major cities across Asia and beyond.

Bali's central position and rich cultural heritage have made it a significant economic and cultural hub. The island offers diverse attractions, from vibrant beaches and surf spots to lush rice terraces and spiritual retreats, drawing millions of international visitors annually. This influx of tourists bolsters the local economy and contributes significantly to Indonesia's national tourism revenue.

In the broader Southeast Asian context, Bali's strategic location positions it as a prime tourist hotspot, attracting visitors from neighboring countries and regions. The island's rich marine biodiversity, located within the Coral Triangle, enhances its appeal to divers and eco-tourists, promoting conservation and sustainable tourism practices. Bali's unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and accessibility solidifies its status as a premier destination.

Bali in the Movies

Bali’s breathtaking landscapes, rich culture, and vibrant lifestyle have made it an attractive location for filmmakers. Here are some notable films and how they depict Bali:

Eat Pray Love (2010)

This film, based on Elizabeth Gilbert's memoir, follows her journey of self-discovery through Italy, India, and Bali. The Bali segment showcases Ubud’s serene landscapes, traditional culture, and spiritual practices. Key scenes include rice terraces, traditional healers, and the vibrant market life in Ubud.

Eat Pray Love" significantly boosted Bali’s tourism, particularly among those seeking spiritual retreats and self-discovery journeys. Many travelers visit Ubud to experience the same tranquility and beauty depicted in the movie.

Alex Cross (2012)

In this crime thriller, a few scenes are set in Bali, showcasing the island’s luxurious resorts and tropical beauty as a contrast to the film’s darker themes.

The film highlighted Bali as a glamorous and exotic location, appealing to audiences seeking luxury travel experiences.

Bali’s enchanting landscapes and rich cultural tapestry have provided a captivating backdrop for various films and documentaries.

These productions have not only showcased the island's natural beauty and cultural richness but also contributed to its global allure as a top travel destination. Whether through romance, drama, or documentary, the depiction of Bali in films continues to inspire and attract audiences worldwide.

Bali Beaches

Kuta Beaches

Kuta Beach is known for its lively atmosphere, making it a hotspot for beginner surfers and beachgoers seeking vibrant nightlife. The beach is lined with numerous bars, restaurants, and shops, and is famous for its stunning sunsets. However, it can be very crowded, especially during peak seasons.

Canggu Beaches

Canggu boasts trendy beaches like Echo Beach, Batu Bolong Beach, and Berawa Beach, popular among surfers and expats. Echo Beach is renowned for its surf breaks and hip cafes, Batu Bolong offers a bohemian vibe with beachfront bars, and Berawa Beach combines laid-back charm with upscale beach clubs like Finns Beach Club. These beaches are great for sunset views but can get busy.

Uluwatu Beaches

Uluwatu features dramatic cliffs and serene beaches like Padang Padang Beach, Dreamland Beach, and Bingin Beach. Padang Padang is picturesque and popular for surfing, Dreamland offers white sand and stunning views, and Bingin Beach provides a secluded charm. These beaches are excellent for surfing and sunset watching, but access can be challenging.

Padang Padang is from the memoir from Eat, Pray, Love.

Nusa Penida Beaches

Nusa Penida is home to breathtaking beaches like Kelingking Beach and Crystal Bay. Kelingking Beach is famous for its T-Rex-shaped cliff and challenging hike, while Crystal Bay offers tranquil waters ideal for snorkeling and diving. These beaches are perfect for adventurers and nature enthusiasts, though some areas require strenuous effort to reach.

Gili Air Beaches

Gili Air Beach offers a laid-back, serene environment perfect for relaxation. Known for its excellent snorkeling and diving spots, this beach is ideal for those seeking a peaceful island escape. The beach features beachfront restaurants, bars, and dive shops, providing a tranquil setting with beautiful sunsets. The island is small, so some areas can feel crowded during peak times.

Each destination offers a unique beach experience, catering to various preferences from lively and vibrant to tranquil and secluded, making Bali and its surrounding islands a diverse and enticing beach destination.

1 Floating Breakfast, Flower Baths, Spa Days, and Balinese Massages

I poured so much love into me in more ways than one in Bali with floating breakfasts, flower baths, spa days, and Balinese massages.

Floating Breakfasts

Floating breakfasts in Bali offer a unique and indulgent dining experience, allowing guests to enjoy a sumptuous meal while lounging in the comfort of their private pool. Typically served on a floating tray or raft, the breakfast spread includes a variety of delicious options, from fresh tropical fruits and pastries to savory dishes and refreshing beverages.

Guests can start their day with a leisurely feast, soaking up the serene ambiance of their villa or resort's pool area. The floating breakfast concept adds a touch of luxury and romance to the dining experience, creating Instagram-worthy moments against the backdrop of Bali's lush tropical scenery.

Many luxury accommodations in Bali, particularly villas and resorts with private pools, offer floating breakfasts as part of their amenities. Guests can customize their breakfast selections and enjoy personalized service as they unwind and relax in their own private oasis.

Floating breakfasts have become a popular trend in Bali, attracting couples on honeymoon or romantic getaways, as well as travelers seeking a memorable dining experience. Whether you're celebrating a special occasion or simply looking to elevate your breakfast routine, indulging in a floating breakfast in Bali is sure to be a highlight of your stay.

This included four floating breakfasts in Ubud, and Villa Senya and Nativ Living Villa with Bali Agent. These are included in my Love, Create, Play Bali Retreat for Creators and CEOs.

See for yourself.

These were on my 2024 Vision

Flower Bath in Bali

Flower baths in Bali offer a luxurious and rejuvenating spa experience that combines the therapeutic properties of water with the aromatic essence of fresh flowers. Typically conducted in a private setting, such as a tranquil outdoor garden or a spa's secluded treatment room, flower baths provide a sensory journey for the mind, body, and soul.

I adored my flower bath in Ubud.

The process begins with the preparation of a large bathtub filled with warm water, infused with fragrant flower petals such as jasmine, frangipani (plumeria), rose, or lotus. These flowers are carefully selected not only for their beautiful appearance but also for their aromatic and therapeutic benefits, which can include relaxation, stress relief, and skin nourishment.

As guests immerse themselves in the fragrant waters, they are enveloped in a soothing cocoon of scents and sensations. The warm temperature of the bath helps to relax tense muscles and promote circulation, while the natural oils and essences released by the flowers moisturize and soften the skin, leaving it feeling silky smooth and rejuvenated.

In addition to the physical benefits, flower baths in Bali are also believed to have spiritual significance, as the act of bathing in floral-infused water is thought to cleanse and purify the body, mind, and spirit. Many Balinese consider flower baths to be a form of ritual cleansing that helps to restore balance and harmony to the individual.

Whether enjoyed as a standalone treatment or as part of a larger spa ritual, flower baths offer a blissful retreat from the stresses of everyday life, allowing guests to reconnect with themselves and the natural beauty of Bali. With their intoxicating scents, soothing warmth, and nourishing properties, flower baths are a cherished tradition that embodies the essence of relaxation and renewal in the Island of the Gods.

Spa Days

A spa day at Nirvana Life, Udara Bali, and Istana in Uluwatu promises a transcendent experience of relaxation and rejuvenation, blending ancient healing traditions with modern luxury. Each of these prestigious wellness sanctuaries offers a range of treatments designed to harmonize the body, mind, and spirit, ensuring a holistic approach to wellness.

Begin your spa day with a refreshing cold immersion, where icy waters invigorate the senses and promote circulation. Alternate with the pool, sauna, red light therapy and jacuzzi.. I spent a blisfful half day at Nirvana Life.

Udara Bali

Situated by the tranquil shores of Canggu, Udara Bali Spa offers a sanctuary of relaxation and rejuvenation. Immerse yourself in the healing powers of water with a hot immersion in their luxurious hydrotherapy pool, where soothing jets massage away tension and stress.

I discovered Udara via their Sunday festival. I did not make it to yoga, breathwork, sound healing and dance because of rain my last Sunday in Bali. I did make it for the spa.

Istana

Perched atop the cliffs of Uluwatu, Istana Spa beckons with panoramic views and world-class amenities. Start your spa day with a hot immersion in their lavish infinity pool, overlooking the azure waters of the Indian Ocean.

Then, drift into a state of bliss as you float weightlessly in their serene floatation tank, allowing your worries to melt away. I loved my floating experience and their food is amazing.

The tour took me on a captivating journey to Bali's cultural and natural wonders, including the mesmerizing Heaven's Gate, the serene Tirta Gangga water palace, and the enchanting Goa Raja Waterfall.

From the awe-inspiring vistas of Heaven's Gate, where I felt as though I was walking among the clouds, to the tranquil oasis of Tirta Gangga's intricately designed pools and fountains, and finally to the hidden gem of Goa Raja Waterfall, where the cascading waters provided a refreshing respite, every moment was a testament to Bali's enchanting allure.

With every exhilarating swing, we captured moments of pure joy and freedom against the backdrop of endless greenery.

After enjoying the exhilarating Bali Swing and soaking in the beauty of Tegallang Rice Fields, I embarked on a soulful journey to Tirta Empul as part of a Day Trip to Ubud.

Located in the village of Tampaksiring, this sacred temple offered a profound purification ceremony experience.

The serene ambiance of the temple grounds, adorned with ornate Balinese architecture and lush greenery, added to the spiritual resonance of the experience.

5 Chasing Waterfalls: Kanto Lampo, Tibumana, Goa Raja, Banyumala, and Leke Leke

Chasing waterfalls all over the world is a passion of mine across all continents. Of course, I went on a waterfall chasing adventure in Bali.

Ubud Day Trip allowed me to explore Kanto Lampo and Tibumana Waterfalls, where I reveled in the serenity of these hidden gems and captured stunning photographs to share with the world.

To further explore Bali's water wonders, I embarked on a Private Driver Trip via Airbnb Experiences with a friend, venturing to Banyumala and Leke Leke Waterfalls in North Bali. Here, surrounded by lush greenery and pristine waters, we basked in the tranquility of these secluded paradises, marveling at the sheer majesty of Bali's waterfalls.

Each waterfall offered a unique and awe-inspiring experience, leaving an indelible mark on my journey through the Island of the Gods.

6 Purification Ceremonies with Meniyeng and Tirta Empul

Experiencing purification ceremonies at Meniyeng and Tirta Empul was a profound journey into the heart of Balinese spirituality and tradition, deepening my connection to the island's cultural heritage.

Through Airbnb Experiences, I had the privilege of participating in a purification ceremony with Meniyeng, guided by a local priest who led us through sacred rituals and prayers to cleanse the body, mind, and spirit. Immersing myself in the serene ambiance of Meniyeng's sacred site, I felt a sense of reverence and tranquility as I embraced the purifying waters and offered prayers of gratitude.

During my Ubud Day Trip, I had the opportunity to visit Tirta Empul Temple, renowned for its sacred springs and purification rituals. Joining throngs of devotees and visitors, I immersed myself in the holy waters of Tirta Empul, following the ancient tradition of purification by submerging myself beneath the sacred fountains. As I moved from fountain to fountain, I felt a profound sense of purification and renewal, as if the waters themselves carried the blessings of centuries-old rituals.

Both experiences left a lasting impression on me, offering moments of introspection and spiritual awakening amidst Bali's rich cultural tapestry. Through these purification ceremonies, I gained a deeper appreciation for the profound significance of water in Balinese Hinduism and the timeless rituals that continue to shape the island's spiritual landscape.

7 Uluwatu Day Trip: Dreamland Beach and Padang Padang Beach

Embarking on an Uluwatu Day Trip, which included visits to Dreamland Beach and Padang Padang Beach, was a blissful exploration of Bali's coastal wonders, steeped in both natural beauty and cultural significance.

As a devotee of "Eat Pray Love" and a lover of cinematic experiences, I couldn't resist immersing myself in the same landscapes that captivated Elizabeth Gilbert in her transformative journey. With the added dimension of a videography experience, courtesy of my Bali Retreat with Love, Create, Play, the day took on a magical quality, blending adventure, exploration, and creativity in perfect harmony.

Dreamland Beach welcomed me with its golden sands and azure waters, offering a picturesque setting for sun-soaked relaxation and oceanic adventures. Channeling the spirit of "Eat Pray Love," I reveled in the sense of freedom and self-discovery that permeated the air, capturing moments of serenity and joy with my camera as I explored the coastline and dipped my toes in the gentle waves.

Next, Padang Padang Beach beckoned with its rugged cliffs and hidden coves, evoking a sense of mystery and wonder reminiscent of the film's enchanting locales. Here, I found myself drawn into the cinematic beauty of the surroundings, capturing the interplay of light and shadow, land and sea, in mesmerizing detail. With each frame, I felt a deeper connection to the essence of Bali, a place where love, spirituality, and creativity intertwine in perfect harmony.

As the day drew to a close, I reflected on the profound beauty of Bali and the transformative power of its landscapes. Through my Uluwatu Day Trip and videography experience, I had not only explored the island's coastal gems but also tapped into a deeper sense of inspiration and creativity, fueled by the magic of "Eat Pray Love" and the boundless beauty of Bali.

In the end, it was more than just a day trip—it was a journey of self-discovery and artistic expression, a testament to the transformative power of love, creation, and play in the heart of paradise.

8 Travel to Gili Air Island: Walk the Island and See the Sea Life

Travel to Gili Air from Bali is a voyage of discovery and tranquility, offering a respite from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Arriving on the shores of Gili Air, I found myself greeted by the serene beauty of the island, with its pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters beckoning me to explore.

Settling into the cozy comfort of 7 Seas Cottages, I embraced the laid-back atmosphere of island life, where the sound of the waves and the rustle of palm trees became my constant companions.

Eager to explore the wonders that lay beyond the shoreline, I set out to walk the perimeter of the island, immersing myself in its natural splendor and discovering hidden coves and panoramic vistas along the way. As I traversed the sandy pathways and lush greenery, I marveled at the simplicity and beauty of island living, where time seemed to slow to a leisurely pace.

Gili Air Island is a picturesque paradise located off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia, forming part of the renowned Gili Islands archipelago. Known for its pristine beaches, crystal-clear waters, and laid-back atmosphere, Gili Air offers visitors a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. The island is characterized by its relaxed vibe, with no motorized vehicles allowed, and transportation primarily consisting of bicycles and horse-drawn carts known as cidomos.

The island's shores are ideal for swimming, sunbathing, and snorkeling, with vibrant coral reefs teeming with marine life just offshore. The highlight of my Gili Air experience came with a snorkeling excursion to neighboring Gili Trawangan and Gili Meno, arranged through GetYourGuide. Setting out on a boat adventure, I embarked on an underwater odyssey, diving into the kaleidoscopic world beneath the waves.

As I donned my snorkel gear and immersed myself in the warm embrace of the ocean, I was greeted by a breathtaking array of marine life, from vibrant coral gardens to schools of tropical fish darting among the reefs.

But the true stars of the show were the majestic sea turtles that gracefully glided through the water, their ancient wisdom and gentle presence leaving me in awe. Over the course of the day, I encountered seven or more of these magnificent creatures, each encounter a reminder of the delicate balance of life beneath the sea. I met amazing new friends from France too.

As the sun dipped below the horizon and painted the sky in hues of pink and gold, I returned to Gili Air, my heart full of gratitude for the beauty and serenity of this island paradise. Atuh Beach, with its white sand and crystal-clear waters, is a picture-perfect paradise ideal for sunbathing and swimming. Captivating and catapulting me into new realms literally and figuratively, Bali beckoned to me like no other place on earth.
